오픈형 원심 펌프의 날개(임펠러)의 형상

소용돌이 펌프는, 유체의 압력을 높이기 위해서 날개차(임펠러-, 영:impeller)의 회전에 의한 원심력을 이용하는 펌프.이러한 원심력을 이용한 펌프를 원심 펌프(Centrifugal pump)라고 말해, 날개의 외주에 소용돌이가타실(casing)만이 있는 형식의 원심 펌프는 보류트폰프(Volute pump, Volute은 나선의 뜻.)(이)라고도 불린다. 날개차에 측판(shroud)이라고 불리는 울타리판을 가지는 밀폐형(클로즈형)과 측판을 가지지 않는 개방형(오픈형)이 있다.
