마이클・하워드(역사학자)

마이클・하워드(Sir Michael Eliot Howard, 1922년 11월 29일-)는, 영국의 역사학자.전문은 군사사.국제 전략 연구소(IISS) 명예 소장.

옥스포드 대학 크라이 파업・교회교로 배운다.제2차 세계대전중은 코르드스트림가즈의 일원으로서 종군, 이탈리아 전선으로 싸워, 두 번의 부상을 경험했다.

전후는 대학으로 돌아와, 석사・박사 학위를 취득, 1947년부터 런던 대학 킹스・컬리지에 부임해, 전쟁 학부(Department of War Studies) 창설에 종사한다.1964년에는 동학부 첫 정교수로 취임했다.1970년부터는 옥스포드 대학에 이동해, 올・소우르즈・컬리지의 치체리 강좌 교수(1977-80해), 현대사 흠정 강좌 교수(1980-89해)를 역임해, 이전에는 국제 전략 연구소 회장도 맡았다.그 후, 예일 대학 역사학부에 군사사・해군사 강좌 담당 교수로서 부임해, 1993년에 퇴직한다.

크라우제빗츠 연구의 태두로서 알려져 하워드등이 번역・해설을 담당한 「전쟁론」의 영어(뜻)이유는 영어권으로의 스탠다드로서 이용되고 있다.2005년, 메리트 훈장을 수상.
