의사(의치)는, 절개를 두꺼운 사람을 말한다.유사하는 개념으로서 지사, 열사등이 있다.

일본에서는, 아카호 사건으로 활약한 아코 로시의 47사를 「아코 기시」라고 경의를 담아 불렀던 것이 유명하고, 이것은 아카호번의 옆으로부터 그 때도리를 예찬한 역사관이지만, 일본 고유의 인형극이나 가부키의 상연 목록 「츄신구라」의 영향이다.

또 조선어의 칭호・경칭의 하나이기도 해, 특히 대한민국에서는, 이토히로부미를 암살해 사형이 된 안중근 등, 조선 독립 운동의 활동가의 대부분이 의사와 존칭 된다.
