런던 대학 동양 아프리카 연구 학원(the School of Oriental and African Studies, 통칭 SOAS)은, 런던 시중심부 러셀・스퀘어에 본부를 가지는 런던 대학에 소속하는, 영국에서는 유일한 지역 연구에 특화한 교육・연구기관이다.다만 런던 대학을 구성하는 다른 교육・연구기관 같이, 개별의 대학으로서 다루어지는 경우가 많다.또 SOAS는 영국의 대학 연합 1994 그룹에 가맹하고 있다.

SOAS가 연구 대상으로 하고 있는 지역은, 그 명칭이 시사하는 대로, 아시아, 아프리카 및 중근동에서, 이러한 지역을 대상으로 하는 연구기관으로는 세계 최대[3]이다.SOAS는 연구 대상의 지역으로부터 다수의 유학생이나 연구자를 받아 들이고 있어 결과적으로 100이상의 나라와 지역으로부터 유학생이 모여, 정규 과정의 학생 40%이상이 유학생이라고 하는 국제색 풍부한 대학[4]가 되고 있다.

SOAS는 2009년 현재, 2개의 캠퍼스를 런던 시내에 짓고 있다. 메인 캠퍼스가 있는 러셀・스퀘어(Russell Square) 캠퍼스와 킹스・크로스역에만큼 가까운 바논・스퀘어(Vernon Square ) 캠퍼스이다.

러셀・스퀘어・캠퍼스는 런던의 문교지구라고도 말해야 할 브룸스베리 지구에 있어, 유니바시티・컬리지・런던이나 런던 대학 본부(Senate House)등의 런던 대학 관련 시설, 대영박물관이나 대영 도서관등의 문화 시설이 지근 거리에 점재하고 있다.러셀・스퀘어・캠퍼스내에도 SOAS 부속의 브루나이・갤러리가 있어, 여러가지 전시회가 거행되고 있다.

러셀・스퀘어・캠퍼스에는 Sir Denys Lasdun 설계로 1973년에 오픈한 도서관이 있어, 아시아・중근동・아프리카 관련의 서적을 중심으로, 120만권 이상의 장서수[5]를 자랑하고 있다.

바논・스퀘어・캠퍼스는 이즈린톤 지구(Islington)에 2001년에 오픈한 캠퍼스에서, 펜 톤 빌딩・로드(Pentonville Road)에 있는 SOAS의 2개의 기숙사로부터 곧 근처에 있다.바논・스퀘어・캠퍼스 주변에서는 작년의 유로 스타의 센트・펑크 라스역의 노선연장을 계기로 한 대규모 재개발이 진행중[6]이다.

학부 구성

SOAS는 세 개의 학부(Faculty)로 구성되어 있다.학부에는 몇 개의 학과(Department)가 소속해 있다. 또 SOAS에는 학부 소속 또는 학제적인 연구소가 40이상 존재하고 있다.이하, 학부 및 학과만 적는다.

일본과의 관계

인적 교류・학술 교류

SOAS는 국립・사립 묻지 않고 많은 일본의 대학과 교류 협정을 체결하고 있어 많은 일본인 학생이 SOAS의 캠퍼스에서 배우고 있다. 이하, SOAS와 교류 협정을 체결하고 있는 일본의 대학인[7].

정규 과정의 일본인 학생이나 일본의 대학으로부터의 유학생에 가세해 SOAS에는 IFCELS (International Foundation Courses and English Language Studies)가 있어, 여기에서는 영국의 대학의 학부 과정에의 입학 자격 취득을 희망하는 고졸자나 영국의 대학원에 진학 예정자 등 다수의 일본인이 재적하고 있다.

일본 연구

일본은 SOAS의 연구 대상이다. 그 때문에 SOAS로는 사회과학계의 학부로 일본의 정치・경제의 연구를 실시하고 있는 것 외, 일본의 언어・문화를 연구하는 학부를 껴안고 있다. 한층 더 일본을 연구하기 위한 전문 연구소 The Japan Research Centre (JRC)[8]이 있어, 40명 이상의 연구자가 일본 연구에 종사하고 있다. 또 일본의 예술 및 문화 연구를 위한 연구소 Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures[9]나 있다.

SOAS의 일본어로의 통칭은 정해지지 않지만, 본고와 같이 동양 아프리카 연구 학원, 또는 런던 대학 동양 아프리카 연구소나 동양 아프리카 연구소, 런던 대학 동양 아프리카학 학원등으로 하는 것이 일반적이다.

덧붙여 제32대 주일 영국 대사인 디 비드・워렌(영문판)도 SOAS의 관계자이다. 일본에 있는 SOAS 동창회의 명예 총재는 미카사노미야 다카히토 황태자이다.

일본형 옥상 정원

2001년 11월 13일에, 대학 부지내의 옥상에 일본식의 정원이 개설되었다.이 정원에서는, 능의 상연, 다도, 전시회 회장, 연극, 리셉션등 , 예술적인 활동에 사용되고 있다.명예 펠로우의 반전 하루히사의 지원에 의해 실현되었다.[10]

평가

SOAS는 전술과 같이 영국에서는 유례없는 지역 연구에 특화한 대학이다.고로 다른 대학이라는 비교는 곤란하지만, 영국 정부의 공식 조사 및 신문사가 제공하는 지표를 보면, 영국에 119교 있는 대학안에서, 또 세계에 있어서의 SOAS의 위치설정이 보여 온다.

Research Assessment Exercise

Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)는, 수년에 한 번, 영국 정부가 영국에 있는 모든 연구기관에 대해서 실시하는 연구 성과의 조사 및 사정이다.영국의 연구기관으로 행해지고 있는 연구를 몇십의 분야로 나누어 그 분야의 전문가가 서로의 연구 성과를 사정해, 영국 정부는 그 결과에 근거해 국내의 연구기관에의 자금 배분을 결정한다.RAE는 지금까지 1992년, 1996년, 2001년, 2008년의 4회 실시되고 있다.

최신의 RAE(2008년판)에 의하면, 종합 랭킹으로 SOAS는 제29위[11]이었다.평가방법이 변경되고 있으므로 정확한 비교는 할 수 없지만, 이 결과는 전회, 2001년의 조사와 거의 같은 순위[12]이다.

또 2001년의 조사로는 SOAS에 있어서의 연구 활동의 약11%가 세계 톱 레벨의 연구라면 사정되고 있었지만[13], 이번 RAE2008로는 약 19.7%[14]로 개선하고 있다.

이번 RAE를 분야별로 보면, SOAS는 연구의 질의 항목으로 아시아 연구(Asian Studies)로 1위[15], 문화인류학(Anthropology)으로 2위[16]으로 건투했다.그러나, 전회의 조사에서 최고 수준의 평가를 얻은 역사학(History), 음악(Music)이 각각 15위[17], 12위[18]으로 침체했다.덧붙여 이번 RAE에 의하면, SOAS에 대해 현재 행해지고 있는 연구 가운데, 규모가 가장 큰 것은 개발학(Development Studies), 그 다음에 아시아 연구(Asian Studies), 3번째에 역사학(History)이 되는 것 같은[19].

신문사에 의한 평가

영국에서는 신문 각지가 독자적인 시점에 근거한 대학 랭킹(종합 랭킹은 아래와 같은 표를 참조)을 발표하고 있다. Sunday Times지는 1997년부터 2007년까지의 10년간의 종합 랭킹으로 SOAS를 21위로 하고 있는[20]. 또 상세한 데이터가 공개되고 있는 Independent지[21]으로 Times지[22]의 2009년도판의 랭킹을 보면, 이하와 같은 SOAS의 특징을 읽어낼 수 있다.

  • 학생의 만족도는 다른 도시형 대학과 같이 낮고 70~80위
  • 연구 레벨로는 톱 10~20위
  • 학부 과정에의 입학난역도로는25~30정도(지원 배율은 약 6배[23])
  • 교원 한 명 당의 학생수가 10.5명과 영국에서도 가장 좋은 부류에 들어간다
  • 대학의 설비에 대한 투자액으로 톱 10

THE-QS World University Rankings

QS세계 대학 랭킹은, 타임즈・하 연・교육과 교육 정보의 전문 회사 Quacquarelli Symonds가 2005년부터 매년 발표하고 있는 세계 대학 랭킹이다.덧붙여 이 랭킹은 2007년에 큰폭으로 사정 방법이 변경되어 이과 학부가 없는 SOAS와 같은 대학에는 불리한 랭킹이 되고 있는 것, 원래 사정자가 영국과 미국의 연구자나 기업 관계자에게 치우쳐 있는 것에 유의할 필요가 있다.
