NGC 7331(Caldwell 30)은, 페가스스좌의 방위에 약 1200만 광년의 위치에 있는 소용돌이 은하이다.1784년에 윌리엄・하-쉘이 발견한[³].NGC 7331 은하군 중(안)에서 가장 밝다.

이 은하는, 크기나 구조가 은하계와 닮아 있어 자주 「은하계의 쌍둥이」라고 불려[⁴]라고 있었지만, 근년의 은하계의 구조에 관한 발견으로, 이 인식은 잘못이었던 것이 나타난[⁵].

통상의 소용돌이 은하에서는, 중앙의 은하 바르지는 은하 원반과 같은 방향으로 자전하고 있지만, NGC 7331의 경우는 원반과 역방향으로 회전하고 있는[⁶].현재의 바르지는, 이 은하에 낙하한 물질에 의해서 형성되고 있다고 생각되고 있지만, 은하의 형성시부터 있었다고 하면, 이러한 상황이 되는 것을 설명하는 것은 곤란하다.

초신성

II-L형 초신성[⁷]SN 1959 D는, 이 은하에서 발생했던 것이 확인된 유일한 초신성인[¹].파로마 천문대에서 밀튼・휴메이손과 H. S.게이츠가 발견한[⁸].
