이 효소의 기질은 아실 CoA, 환원형 수용체와 O₂로, 생성물은Δ12-아실 CoA, 수용체와 H₂O이다. 이 효소는,18:1의 올레인산의Δ¹²의 탄소를 불포화화해ω-6지방산인18:2의 리놀산을 생성한다.이 효소는, 동물에는 존재하지 않고, 식물, 미생물에만 존재한다.
