대기 신용 은의 기업의 해외 지점 및 현지 법인이 현지 것에서 대부와 보증 등을받을 때 일본 은행이 현지 은행을 수익자로 채무의 변제를 보장하기 위해 발행한다. 채무 불이행의 경우에는 현지 은행 Statement 등을 함께 제시하고 채무를 구상한다. 해외에서는 SBLC (Stanby Letter of Credit의 약어)라고도한다.
