피라에・오벨리스크
피라에・오벨리스크(Philae obelisk)는, 1815년에 상 이집트의 피라에섬에서 발견되어 그 직후에 윌리엄・존・뱅크스가 입수한 2개의 오벨리스크 중 하나이다.이집트의 상형문자와 고대그리스어의 2개의 언어로 비문이 써 있어[1], 서로의 문서의 번역은 아니었지만, 이것들을 비교하는 것으로, 뱅크스는 상형문자 문자로의 「프트레마이오스」와「클레오파트라」의 이름을 인식할 수 있었다고 믿었다.그의 해독은, 후에 토마스・영과 쟌=프랑소와・살포리온에 의해서 확인되어 살포리온에 의한 최종적인 상형문자의 해독에 기여했다.이 비문에는, 피라에에 있어서의 이집트의 신관에 의한 요청과 프트레마이오스 8세와 클레오파트라 2세, 3세로부터의 긍정적인 대답이 기록되고 있어 그 일자는 기원 전 118년부터 기원 전 117년이었다.
