진통효과가 있지만, 오피오이드 수용체에 작용하지 않는다.그 대신에, 오피오이드 수용체에 작용하는 메티오닌-enkephalin의 방출, 분해 저해 작용을 나타낸다.또 신경전달물질, 신경 수식 물질(영문판)의 성질을 가진다.쿄트르핀은 사람의 뇌척수액중에 존재해, 지속성 동통의 환자의 경우 농도가 낮은[²].
